Neutrino-Induced Giant Air Showers in Large Extra Dimension Models
نویسندگان
چکیده
In models based on large extra dimensions where massive spin 2 exchange can dominate at high energies, the neutrino-proton cross section can rise to typical hadronic values at energies above 10 eV. The neutrino then becomes a candidate for the primary that initiates the highest energy cosmic ray showers. We investigate characteristics of neutrino-induced showers compared to proton-induced showers. The comparison includes study of starting depth, profile with depth, lateral particle distribution at ground and muon lateral distribution at ground level. We find that for cross sections above 10 mb there are regions of parameter space where the two types of showers are essentially indistinguishable. We conclude that the neutrino candidate hypothesis cannot be ruled out on the basis of shower characteristics.

Cosmic ray events above 10eV are on the verge of confronting fundamental particle physics. The neutrino is the only candidate primary among established particles capable of crossing 100 Mpc intergalactic distances unimpeded. We argue that consistency with the Standard Model at low energies, together with large interactions at high energies, directly indicates new physics of massive spin-2 excha...
متن کامل30TH INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE An upper limit on the electron-neutrino flux from the HiRes instrument
Air-fluorescence detectors such as the High Resolution Fly’s Eye (HiRes) instrument are very sensitive to upward-going, Earth-skimming ultrahigh energy electron-neutrino-induced showers. This is due to the relatively large interaction cross sections of these high-energy neutrinos and to the LandauPomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect. The LPM effect is responsible for a significant decrease in the cr...

متن کاملCosmic Rays and New Physics at the TeV: the Neutrino-Nucleon Cross Section
Ultrahigh energy neutrinos can be used to explore the physics at the TeV scale. We study the neutrino-nucleon cross section in models with extra dimensions and the fundamental scale at the TeV. In particular, we discuss the production of string resonances and the gravitational interactions (multigraviton exchange and production of microscopic black holes) in these models. We show that the new T...
